Lip Sync Battle rewind

There are no words to describe how much I am truly enjoying Spike's LSB. I have watched every episode. I have included the most memorable clip that I have seen so far. Mike Tyson vs Terry Crews. Last week was pretty good too. It was Salt vs Peppa. They both did so well I couldn't pick a favorite. This week is going to be Queen Latifah vs Marlon Wayans. I am a huge Latifah fan so you already know I will be right in front of my Tv at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday. You can catch up on the battles you may have missed by going to youtube or Spike's website.

Weekend Reading

I often read multiple books at a time just because there are so many good ones out there.  This weekend I am reading just one At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen. The story is about a married couple, Ellis and Maddie, and their friend Hank. The trio decide after a long and embarrassing night of drinking to leave America and head to Scotland in the middle of  WWII to hunt for the Loch Ness monster. I am only up to chapter 5 but I am definitely having trouble putting it down. Here is the link to buy it from Amazon:

I was just going over some of my previous posts and realized that I never mentioned anything about finishing the book. I can sum it up in one word for you... Wonderful!  I loved the way I got so wrapped up in the story and how emotionally invested I became. I was angry and hurt when Maddie was angry and hurt. When she found happiness I was grinning from ear to ear. Please do yourself a favor and grab this to read. It would be a great way to spend a weekend.

New to Netflix

I love to watch movies and TV shows. This is exactly what drove us to setup a Netflix account. We each have our own icon that we can each sign in and customize the types of things we like to watch. Mine is very eclectic. I am currently head over heels for the Netflix originals. I have watched Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black, and Daredevil. The newest two series to catch my eye are. Grace and Frankie and Between.

Grace and Frankie stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as two woman who end up bonding over their mutual law partner husbands who have been having an affair for over 20 years with each other. It seems like it will be funny and heartfelt. It aired on May 8 and I plan to binge watch this weekend.
Between is set in Pretty Lake. It stars Jennette McCurdy as a pregnant teen in a town  where everyone over 21 comes down with an unknown disease and begins dying. The big difference with this new show is that it will be a weekly show airing on Netflix. The season is 6 episodes and will air tonight at 9 p.m. ET.

Now tonight I am going to miss this first episode of  Between because I will be watching  episode 2 of Fox's Wayward Pines. If u did not get a chance to watch this yet I highly recommend it.  The first episode can be found online at

New DVD releases for May 19

This week is kind of a slow one for new DVD releases. First up is American Sniper. This is based on the life and death of US Navy Seal Chris Kyle.  It has gotten amazing reviews and the book is definitely worth the read as well.  Bradley Cooper gives an amazing performance as Chris Kyle.

Next up is Cymbeline. It stars Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, John Leguizamo, and Ethan Hawke. This is based on Shakespeare's play by the same name. It involves dirty cops, bike gangs, and drugs so it is a pretty good pick for action/drama.

Last but not least is Strange Magic. This is based on a Midsummer Night's Dream as envisioned by George Lucas. It is an animated film for the kiddies and grown ups alike. It features the voices of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, and Kristin Chenoweth. This one has very catchy music, elves, fairies, goblins, and all kinds of mystical creatures doing battle over a very important potion.

Happy Viewing!

Monster Week

Last night marked the beginning of Animal Planets "Monster Week". We watch River Monsters faithfully every week . Jeremy Wade is the host and he is amazing. Each night he is going to be answering viewer questions and showing behind the scene footage. Tonight I have already watched Man-eating Zombie Cats. I can't wait for the season finale 2 hour special and the special premier of The Cannibal of the Jungle.
Fish On!!

Mad Max Fury Road/ Hot Pursuit

Last night our local drive-in played these two movies together and my boyfriend and I went to watch them. I thought Hot Pursuit was really funny. I just love both of the actresses and the plot was pretty good. Spoiler alert:   Agent Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) is sent on a mission to redeem her joke of a career on the police force. She is to retrieve a couple that are going to be informants on a major drug dealer.  Her partner gets shot along with the husband and Cooper is left to try to get Mrs. Riva (Sofia Vergara) to headquarters to testify. Cooper is a very "by the book" and Mrs. Riva is the epitome of the fiery Latina woman.  There are gun fights, car chases, and cat fights.  It was so entertaining to watch the bond form between the two women.

The second movie played was the reboot movie Mad Max Fury Road. I was very excited to see this film ......and then I did. Spoiler alert: Max ( played by Tom Hardy) opens up the movie with a brief monologue about all the people in his life he hasn't been able to save. He then eats a two-headed lizard, gets in his car, speeds across the desert while being chased and inevitably captured. Then I was confused for like a good 20 mins as to what the Hell was going on. It turns out the whole world has become a dried up sandbox and the group that captured Max has been working on trying to repopulate their society with healthy babies from the "official wives/breeders". The Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) has betrayed her boss by stealing the wives to take them somewhere safe and thus the car chase that lasts the entire movie with various clans in pursuit.  My boyfriend thought this was a pretty good movie. I have no clue how I feel. I won't say I hated it but I will probably never watch it again.  One good thing I will say is that this film does carry on with the same "end of days" vibe the previous Mad Max movies had. FYI: One of the cars chasing the escapees has a band on it. I am not even kidding there is a guitar player and drummers on a rig providing the bad guys with their own theme music during the entire chase scene. It is freaking absurd.

A Jem movie? hmmmmmm

I was a little girl when this amazing little doll debuted called Jem. She was a rock star with a band called The Holograms. She even had a rival band called The Misfits. My girlfriends and I had all these dolls and played for hours with them not to mention watching the cartoons. So imagine my surprise when I discovered that Jon M. Chu is directing a live version of it. It has been updated from the 80's version to make it have more appeal to today's audience but I am undecided on how I feel about this whole thing. I will let you watch this little "Jem" of a trailer and make your own decision (pun totally and idiotically intended).

Do you choose recipes to make based on a photo?

This was the prompt for yesterday's blog challenge and the answer is absolutely YES. An amazing pic of a recipe will not only make me want to try it but I may even possibly end up drooling. My daughter and I have been practicing the art of food photography. Trying to stage food to look appealing is much harder than I thought it would be but it is a challenge I am enjoying. Photos of recipes are the reason I have most of the pins I do on my "recipes to try " board on Pinterest.

Wayward Pines

Fox is debuting a new 10 episode tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET. Wayward Pines is based on a book trilogy by Blake Crouch. The general storyline involves a goverment agent going to the town to search for missing his missing partner who was believed to have stopped in the town. There is a horrible car accident just after Agent Ethan Burke (played by Matt Dillon) arrives and when he wakes up he has severe gaps in his memory and that is where the creepy fun begins. The cast is rounded out by Juliette Lewis, Carla Gugina, and Terrence Howard. The show is produced and directed by M.Night Shyalaman. I am super excited to watch this. For more info a sneak peek click on the link below from USA Today.

Movie May-hem 2.0

Today is new release Tuesday so without further ado I give you today's Dvd releases to check out. The Cobbler ft Adam Sandler,Steve Buscemi, Dustin Hoffman, and Method Man. Tracers ft Taylor Lautner, Blackhat ft Chris Hemsworth and Viola Davis, Still Alice ft Julianne Moore and Kristin Stewart. This one was adapted from a very touching book (I am looking forward to this one). Last but not least is Mortdecai ft Johnny Depp, Gwynth Paltro and a whole slew of great actors. I saw the preview for this and couldn't stop shaking my head. I love Johnny Depp and am planning to watch this on Blueray this weekend.

Day 11 and 12 Post for May NaBloPoMo

I combined two of the topics in just one picture for this post. Day 11 asks if I secretly take photos of others and Day 12 asks to share a hard subject to photograph. My subject is the same for both. My boyfriend always refuses to take pictures. He will literally turn his face or put his hands over the camera to avoid being photographed. So over the last 7 years I have gotten pretty sneaky,  I give you the illusive bf pic......

My Favorite Ribs Recipe

Yesterday we decided to make ribs. We made them before but we always baked them in the oven but we wanted to grill them instead.  We bought about 3 lbs of spareribs from the local grocer. I make my own dry rub to use on these. The first thing to remember is to remove the membrane from the back of the ribs to avoid them being tough (this is the super thin white film on the back covering bones and meat). Then I lightly rubbed all sides with some extra virgin olive oil. Next up I add the dry rub. You will want to mix this up before your hands get all icky from removing the membrane and oil rub.  I mix together 1tbs of each spice. I use kosher salt, onion powder, dark brown sugar, chinese 5 spice, McCormick Grill Mates Smokehouse Maple, Goya Adobo( found with Hispanic/Mexican foods), paprika, and black pepper.
I sprinkle the rub liberally on both sides of the ribs and rub it in really well. We have a propane grill that we preheated on low for about 15 minutes (we lined the rack with tin foil and used an olive oil spray to lightly coat foil to prevent sticking). Once the grill was heated we just added the ribs on and let them cook on low for an hour and a half. The last 20 minutes we used to baste our favorite BBQ sauce on both sides of the meat ( we used Sweet Baby Ray's Honey Barbecue Sauce)( check out their recipes on We removed them from the grill and let them rest about 20 minutes and then we chowed down.

We were in such a hurry to eat that the "After " picture was actually taken today with a leftover.
approx. 3 lbs of spareribs (membrane removed)
2-3 Tbs of extra virgin olive oil (for rub)
1 bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce ( for basting the last 20 mins)
Dry Rub: 1 Tbs  each
kosher salt
black pepper
Chinese style 5 spice
Goya Adobo
McCormick's Grill Mate Smokehouse Maple
dark brown sugar
onion powder

Mother's Day Weekend

This has been another semi-busy weekend. I intended to post something on Friday but I ended up getting so busy researching things to build in our yard to make it more enjoyable that I never did post. That being said, I wanted to just take a moment to share some last minute Mother's Day gifts. Every Mom is different. There are some who are bookworms. A great gift for them would be a kindle or gift card to their favorite bookstore. (Amazon was running some pretty good sales).Does Mom love to garden? Why not buy her some pretty flowers or containers and seeds to grow some herbs in. Gift cards are always good. Take her out to eat to her favorite restaurant or to a special brunch somewhere. The important part of any gift is to remind Mom that she is amazing and you love her.

What I am reading

I love reading all kinds of books. I actually have a BA in English because my hope at one point was to be and Editor or an Agent. Life happens and this is most definitely not my career but I did work at a very nice publishing house in White Plains, NY and it was an amazing experience.

If you have not been to the Goodreads website you really should check it out. I could spend just as much time there as I do on Facebook.  The best part is you can submit questions to authors, keep track of anything you want to read, add or read reviews, and more.

I also subscribe to BookBub. This may be the most amazing site. You sign up and pick the type of books you typically read and everyday they send you a customized email with whatever ebooks are on sale.  Most even end up being free. I can not explain how many books are on my Kindle at the moment not to mention my cloud. This site is directly linked to Amazon which works well if you have an account setup already.

You know what the first thing I did when I woke up today was?   I went on Goodreads and imported some of my books from Amazon to my "book shelves" to make it easier to review and organize.\

Feel free to use these links to explore:

or follow me on Goodreads:

Welcome Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana

So as you have probably heard by now the above moniker belongs to the newest member to the Royal Family.  I love this name so much. It just seems so perfect.  Royals are so cool they don't even have to use a last name. What a great pre-Mother's Day gift. I loved hearing this news tucked away in between all the sad, gut wrenching top stories.

Food Glorious Food!

I love food. I don't mean just eating good food...I mean the whole process. I love trying new recipes I find online, in books, or making my own creations.  I have promised my friends to share some of my favorite recipes and blogs from other foodies.  Sunday is Mother's Day so I thought I would share my own little invention.  This is what I made for my family for Valentine's Day breakfast but it would be perfect for Mother's Day as well.   I call it Waffles a la Mom.
The recipe is pretty straight forward.  My Sister-in law bought my Ghirardelli Chocolate Strawberry squares that I just fell in love with. I toasted some buttermilk waffles ( Great Value $2.00) and covered them with a pat of real butter ( Land o Lakes Salted Sweet Cream $2.50 on sale). I lightly drizzled the bottom with  Hershey's chocolate syrup and sliced, fresh strawberries ( syrup was on hand and berries were 2/$5 @the local grocer). Then I covered with a spray of sweetened whip cream in a can( also on hand). Then I added the second waffle, more syrup, berries, whipped cream and topped with chocolate sprinkles(Also on hand. What can I say we like sundaes in this house). Then just because I was trying to make it more pretty I sliced just deep enough into a strawberry to stand a square in and then fanned the ones out that were on top of the waffles.   Enjoy!
1 box of waffles
chocolate syrup
whipped cream
chocolate sprinkles
Chocolate square ( I loved Ghirardelli but any candy you like will do)

Movie May-nia

I may have mentioned it before but just in case....I love, love, love the month of May. I get to celebrate Mother's Day and my birthday. This means that there are 2 whole days where my "mini-me" has to be on her best behavior. The weather gets noticeably better and the local drive-in opens. The best part of May is that marks the beginning of " Summer blockbuster" season! Anyone who knows me will tell you that I just love watching previews. I mean how else am I supposed to know what I want to watch. I love all genres of movies but nothing is better than a good comedy or action flick. I already mentioned in a previous post how excited I get for any and all Marvel Studio projects whether it is on the big screen, Netflix, or TV.  This month has so many options like Hot Pursuit(May 8) starring Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon, Mad Max Fury Road (May 15) starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, Tomorrowland (May 22) starring George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson and Poltergeist (May 22) starring Sam Rockwell and RoseMarie DeWitt. These are all movies I intend to see but there are two others that I am beyond excited about seeing. The first is Pitch Perfect 2 (May 15) starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Elizabeth Banks as well as many other amazing talents. I am going with a group to see it opening night. Not only did I buy the first movie for my home collection but I also bought the soundtrack. Both of these have received multiple uses. Seriously, my kid and I play the soundtrack so much that we each have our own specific parts to sing. We are not even going to talk about excessive quoting of lines. Check out the trailer below.  The other film I am anxiously awaiting is San Andreas (out May 29) featuring Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino.  These two worked together on the movie Faster and I just love them both. Truth be told I would watch a commercial of paint drying if The Rock was in it but it just works out well for me that he happens to be an amazingly good actor. This movie is being shown in 3D which is exactly how I plan to watch. I follow Dwayne Johnson on Facebook and so he has been passing along pics and info throughout the whole filming to fans. I know this is going to be one of those "on the edge of my seat" type of films.

Day 6 Prompt

Todays prompt: How often am I in pictures?

I detest having my picture taken. I avoid it at all costs. I'd say in a year's time I have my photo taken maybe 6 or 7 times.  My daughter is forever trying to take selfies with me, which would be fine if it was while I looked even remotely normal. Lol. Instead she does it when my hair is crazy or my eyes are all puffy from allergies. The same seems to hold true for my job and the yearly badge photo.

Happy Cinco De Mayo

Cinco De Mayo was Tuesday and we are had some traditional foods to eat. I am made ,of course, tacos because any excuse to have them makes my daughter very happy. I made them with ground turkey instead of beef and with beans and rice.  Note to self: ground turkey tacos were not a favorite at my house! My daughter fed the dog the meat then made a huge plate of nachos with the refried beans, lettuce, rice, and Tapito. Always with the Tapito.

Dear Mr. Grey

Today is Tuesday which means all the new DVD's have been released. There are two that I want to focus on today. The first is Fifty Shades of Grey.  Now I, like everyone else in the universe, have read all 3 of the Fifty Shades books.  Actually the girls at my job and I all read them at the same time like a mini book club.  I liked the 1st, loved the second, and was unhappy with the ending of the third.  The thing is when you read a book you start picturing the characters in your mind and everyone pictures something different.  I also read the Twilight books and would never in a million years have pictured Robert Pattinson playing  Christian Grey. He was perfect as Edward Cullen ( the inspiration for the Christian character). I would be lying to say I was not disappointed with Charlie Hunam not being able to film this movie. I was a fan of  Jamie Dornan from the second I saw him on ABC's Once Upon A Time ( he was the sheriff). I was undecided on Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. I saw the movie opening weekend. I loved the way Anastasia was portrayed with a sense of humor that was not quite so obvious in the book. I felt like Christian did not smile at all in the movie but in the book it was notated several times that he had a wonderful smile.  There were some scenes that were cut from the theatrical version for obvious reasons. I hope these are included in the unrated DVD version. I mostly think that I was underwhelmed by the movie because it didn't live up to my imagined version.  I plan to watch the movie again where I can not be so critical or distracted by the very loud couple sitting in the theater behind me.
The other movie is Selma. I have not seen this yet and plan to watch it this weekend.  I am very excited to watch it. I love movies that tackle difficult yet important historical times or issues. It seems like these days American history gets glossed over and that is a shame. I have a daughter in 9th grade who has not been nearly as informed about US history especially civil rights, slavery, or suffrage as well as I was growing up. As a parent and a history nerd, I male sure to pick up the slack.  I feel like it is so important as a woman, minority, and American to understand where we started and how far we have come. We watched The Butler (AMAZING) and this opened up a great conversation for us. I hope Selma will do the same.
Other new to DVD movies for this week:
Black or White ft Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer (also on my must watch list!)
The Last Five Years ft Anna Kendrick
Mad Max Collector's edition ft Mel Gibson
Miss Julie ft Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain
A Few Best Men ft Rebel Wilson
This is just a few of the ones worth mentioning

Day 4 writing/photo prompt

Today's writing prompt asks if I think one side of my face is more photographic than the either....the answer is absolutely yes!  I would have said it was my left side a few years ago but it seems to have changed some how.  I had a lot of fun trying out different poses for this one. I am not big on selfies and since I am usually the one taking pictures I forgot how to pose. LOL. Here it is though.

What a busy weekend

Wow this weekend has just flown by. There were a lot of big things happening that deserve a few moments of reflection. Friday was the opening night of Avengers: The Age of Ultron (I am so excited to see this movie but I have had to push it back to possibly Tuesday night). It opened with 187.7 million at the box offices.I have seen so many reviews that said it wasn't as good as the previous one but I also saw many more reviews stating how awesome it was. I guess it just depends on how big of a fan you are of the Marvel Studio films.  Saturday morning Prince William, Princess Catherine, and Prince George welcomed a new addition to the family. The new Princess of Cambridge had not had her name publicly released as of this post but the internet is all abuzz with suggestions. Congrats to the Royal Family.  Saturday afternoon brought on the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. There are all kinds of photos of the wild hats worn by celebrities as well as Derby related food menus circulating out there.  The winner was a horse named American Pharoah and the jockey was Victor Espinoza. Mr. Espinoza also won the Derby in 2002 on War Emblem and last year's Derby on California Chrome. Saturday night brought the much anticipated fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather or "MayPac" as it was dubbed.  Needless to say it was a huge pay-per-view event. The winner in 12 rounds was Floyd Mayweather. This leaves him with a professional boxing record of 48-0. I did not get to watch the movie, derby, or the fight. I did watch Jamie Foxx perform the National Anthem. I liked it!! That's right... I liked it. People were all over the place tweeting and posting about how awful his performance was. This is what I say to the haters... until you have to stand in front of millions of people (at the arena and at home) singing a song that important you should Not judge. I think anytime an artist changes up the style of this song everyone has something to say.I added a video form YouTube below (just ignore the talking in the background by the original poster)  Grrr. I did catch the highlight reels but my actual weekend consisted of trips to Home Depot, filling my raised garden bed with dirt, digging out the space for our new firepit, catching up on movies I missed and reading. I watched The Wedding Ringer with Josh Gad and Kevin Hart and it did not disappoint. It was very funny. Who wouldn't like a movie about a loner marrying the girl of his dreams with a hired best man and groomsmen? I also finished reading The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks. My friends make fun of me because I am refusing to see the film version of it.  I loved this book. It was a very touching story that just reaches out and grabs you. That being said, I will not pay to watch a movie guaranteed to make me cry in a crowded theater. I will do this in the privacy of my own home where I can cry as ugly as I want without being judged. I always prefer to read the book before the movie so I can "geek out" and compare both. This did not go as planned for Fifty Shades of Grey but that is a convo for Tuesday.  Cinco de Mayo and Fifty Shades dvd release on the same day. It already seems like that will be my favorite day of the upcoming week.

My Passion

The prompt for today was "my passion". This is my beautiful daughter Taylor. I posted her pic because I am most passionate about being the best Mom I can be for her. I want more than anything to be able to say I gave her all the best of me and she will be able to handle whatever life throws at her. Now if only I can make it through the next 3 years of high school without wanting to yell incoherently every time those teenager hormones kick in.

Happy May Day!

Every May 1st marks the start of my favorite month. Not only does my birthday happen but it makes me happy to see all of nature waking up from its long slumber. I remember being a little kid and making little origami cones/baskets and filling them with whatever wild flowers I had found and leaving the whole thing on my Grandma's porch. I decided today would be the perfect day to finally get my planting started. We are growing lime basil, dill, garlic chives, and sage in terra cotta containers on the porch. I am also ordering some lemongrass to grow because my goal is to be able enjoy my lil' back porch without the damn mosquitos killing me. We have a very nice creek that runs past our house but this is also why the little bloodsuckers are so bad. My boyfriend built us a raised garden bed that is about 8'x6' to plant our veggies in. Last year we used 2 of those 5 gallon totes to attempt our first go around with gardening. We had some pretty good success so this year we decided to upgrade. The only seeds we have for that as of yet are carnival peppers. I will post pics along the growing season so you can see how well it may or may not be turning out.
