The Martian was Out of This World!

I have been so busy trying to stay on schedule to complete my 2016 reading challenge that I have not been keeping up on my movies and shows like I wanted to.  I am very excited for the movies and new TV series that are coming out for 2016 ( more on those later). There were a few films that came out at the end of last year that I have waited to rent or buy so I have included them in my 2016 list.  Ridley Scott's The Martian was one of the ones I was looking forward to.

The film is about  astronaut/botanist Mark Watney ( Matt Damon) being stranded on Mars and the obvious rescue that follows.  His crew was on a mission that ended abruptly due to an intense storm.  Mark was struck by flying debris and considered dead due to the atmosphere on the planet and the hole ripped in his suit.  Surprise.....He was still alive.  He was able to get back to the base camp left behind and began the process of trying to figure out how to survive until a rescue mission ( a 4 year process) can reach him.  The rest of the movie plays out in 2 parts. We get to see Mark's progress in trying to cultivate food on a barren planet. We also see him working on a way to communicate with NASA. We get to see the simultaneous work being done here on Earth to bring him back home as the second part of the story unfolding.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was moving and actually pretty funny in some parts. The cast was amazing as well.  Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Sea Bean, Michael Pena, Chiwetel Ejifor and Jeff Daniels make an great line up. I did enjoy this movie a lot but it is not one that I would watch multiple times. It is more of a one and done kind of viewing. I would recommend it to anyone who loves space exploration movies or is simply a fan of any of these actors.

The trailer above as well as some pretty interesting behind the scenes type stuff can be found on YouTube.
