Sunflower Touches by Cheryl Oblon (Review)

Genre: YA

I am a fan of YA books and series but I must admit that I have had my fill of the "end of the world" style ones that have become so popular lately.   This is such a refreshing read. Seriously it is awesome. This story is set in Cincinnati, OH. It is about a blended family of two different races from two very different economic lifestyles.  Chloe is the oldest of her sisters at 16. She has 2 little sisters, Hannah-15 and Paige-14.  It's just been the three of them and their Dad for several years since her mother's passing.  Dad met and married Nat, who also has 3 teenage daughters. Catalina is the oldest of Nat's girls at 16 and her twin sisters, Gab and Isa, are 14. The story is about how all 6 girls are learning to adjust to the new family dynamic. There are many themes running throughout this book. The author covers everything from typical sisterly drama, bullying, homosexuality, underage drinking, and the date rape drug.  These are all very delicate subjects but I thought they were handled brilliantly in this book. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "Love hits you like a bus. Hopefully, it's the right one." This is just an example of how engaging the author's writing style is.

The cover of the book was appealing in a cutesy, girly, kind of way. Almost like I had sketched it out myself for my own teenage daughter to use a maybe a journal cover.  You learn the symbolic nature of the sunflowers and the car as you are reading the book and that just makes it all the more appealing.   This book is actually the first in a series, The DIY Dolls series is actually based on Chloe's Dad and Nat encouraging each of the girls to work on creative projects together and film the whole process. Each book will be a new sister's story and I intended to read them all. My 15 year old loved this book as well and she has not been known to be an avid reader but this book spoke to her and so our next bonding experience will be over this new series.

I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts on it.  Amazon has the electronic version of this for sale at the time of this posting for $0.99.  You can also read more about this author on her website
