This was a surprise gem!! I love music related shows and movies but was not sure how this was gonna be. I watched the trailer above (this one and more can be found on Youtube) and felt it was worth at least watching the first episode. The plot is all about the rise of new musical genres Hip Hop. Disco, and Punk in the Bronx during the 70's. It shows how people like Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc served as idols for the youth and shows how music in general can be a saving grace.
The show seems very authentic in the way the cast is dressed, slang used, and historical events happening around that time. Well...at least based on what I have learned of this time period ( I wasn't born til '78 and in MD not the Bronx lol). I will say that there were parts of the first episode that seemed a little too "dramatic" at some parts but it was well done enough that I just had to watch the next one. Needless to say, I was hooked and have watched half of the 12 episodes at this point.
The music is amazing! I have found myself humming some of the songs in the middle the day for no reason . Not really a big surprise as Baz Lurhmann (think Moulin Rouge) is one of the creators and Nas is one of the executive producers. The cast is full of amazing talent...some very familiar faces ( Jimmy Smits, Giancarlo Esposito, and Jaden Smith) and also some very new faces ( Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Herizen F. Guardiola). My favorite part....each episode opens with a rapper recapping everything that has happened in the series so far.
